2009 One Book One Community – The Vote is Final

ALCA

So what does the future hold for the 2009 One Book selection? The votes are in, and a title has been chosen. In the upcoming weeks we’ll announce the title and begin the process of preparing for our 2009 program.

Our libraries and community partners voted and selected the book they want to use to discuss the theme of “Visions of the Future.” Two hundred and fifty-five people voted. So which book will it be: The Giver, 1984 or The Road? Check back in the next few weeks to see the announcement of the book chosen for 2009.

Reading and civic discourse lead to an informed, involved, and more connected community, and One Book was designed with that goal in mind. Although communities throughout the U.S. embrace the One Book concept, ACLA broadened the scope of its program by focusing on theme first, then choosing a book that invites discussion and broadens perspectives.

The information below will give you an idea of the criteria we use for selection:

  • Does the book lend itself to a variety of programs?
  • Does it reflect the chosen topic (in this case, Visions of the Future)?
  • Will it generate interesting discussions?
  • Is there a movie tie-in?
  • Does it focus on an issue of importance to Western PA residents?
  • Will it be read?
  • Is the book still in print?
